Slimming Down on a Digital Diet

susanharrow | August 30, 2006

Someone in the CBS photo department “got a little zealous” when digitally doctoring the photo of Katie Couric to take off 20 lbs–unbeknownst to Katie, or the rest of the mucky mucks at CBS. Seems we hold different standards for journalists than for actresses and the like as airbrushing and slimming occurs on a regular basis to such aging beauties as Sharon Stone and Melanie Griffith etc. Should there be the same standard in images for truthtelling that we hold for words? I think so.

Do Confessions Spur Book Sales?

I came across an interesting op-ed piece by a noted Russian columnist on the confession by Pulitzer Prize Winning Gunter Grass’ statement that he had served in the Waffen SS in 1945.

Even in this day and age, this astounding confession is disturbing especially in light of his anti-facist novel ‘The Tin Drum’. What’s just as bothersome is it is seemingly tied (as the columnist opined) to the notion that Grass made this confession at the same time his publisher is hoping for big sales with his book ‘Peeling the Onion’.

Do we really want to see the photos from Angelina Jolie’s baby shower?

I can’t believe someone stole the memory stick right out of her house (from a blurb in People magazine, was it?). And who says they want to be a celebrity? Haute magazine, the latest in rags on the hunt for celebrities or ones on the rise, is soliciting tidbits from established and wannabe stars. Do we really care about who stayed in what hotel? I hope it doesn’t mean we’ll see more news on when Star Jones sells the apartment with Al Reynolds.
