Share Your Story Create Community Build Your Business

Create your TEDx talk

By telling your powerful story, you can heal yourself and the world.

This is a story about how community was created through speaking.

Tricia Brouk recently went on Amy O’Neill’s podcast called: The Trauma Impact to talk about 9/11 and what she did on 9/12.

Amy is one of the inaugural Speakers Who Dare and a two time Speaker Salon Alum, Tricia’s program in NYC.

Amy is a survivor from the Boston Marathon bombing and asked Tricia to come on and talk about herself before and after 9/11.

Here’s what happened: Tricia was downtown when the planes hit and saw the Twin Towers fall. She shares that sound the buildings made as they came crashing down were like a screaming cry for humanity.

In shock, Tricia wandered around breathing in dust until finally making her way home to 11th Street and Avenue A, where she watched the news, not fully understanding what had happened or what to do. She says she had a metallic taste in her mouth for weeks. Because she lived below 14th street, she even had to show I.D. to get home, as they wouldn’t allow anyone who didn’t live there access. No cars. It was empty.

The city was silent. Eerily so.

The city also rallied and they came together in powerful ways. People stood on the West Side Highway cheering on the daily rescue and firefighter teams who went back and forth to Ground Zero. She was in a show at the time and the theater was a block away from the West Side Highway, where she saw this outpouring daily. And yes, the show went on.

She was conflicted at first about why they would still perform.

Who cares about theater?

It turns out, a lot of us.

A powerful lesson Tricia teaches is that the audiences helped remind her of the beauty in the world. This was why she showed up at the theater and why I’m sharing this story. She was helping people heal. I also know the power your story has to heal.

I have another story I want to share with you.

Tricia says:

“The incredible Sarah Montana, an unknown speaker to me, sent in her written application for TEDxLincolnSquare in 2018. It was about forgiveness. She wrote about how her mother and brother had been murdered on Christmas eve by someone they knew in the neighborhood. She went on to say that, she knew forgiveness was important, and that she was able to do this, and by going on her journey from dark to light, she wanted to share with a wider audience how to forgive.

I was not going to ask her to move onto the next round, the video submission, based on her written application. My thought was, “How can I listen to her speak and share this story and not feel sorry for her? And not feel bad as she shares this devastating idea?”

It was at that moment, I knew I had to challenge myself. I had to give her the opportunity to send me a video submission about the idea of why forgiveness is important and HOW to actually forgive.

To this day, Sarah’s video submission is the most compelling I’ve ever received. By sharing her story, she has been healed and gives others the opportunity to also heal. I put Sarah on my TEDx stage and during the process of script analysis and coaching with me, she has gone onto having an incredibly successful speaking and writing career.

And her TEDxLincolnSquare talk is now on the main platform at TED.com.

She is having a massive global impact.

Sharing your impactful story will make a difference. By reaching just one person, you can change a life.”

This is why I want you to reach more people, and have this kind of impact, by sharing your story.
