the canvas

By Guest Blogger Maya Stein

Enough has been said about that blank space, the pause
of possibility pointing to a still-unnamed story. We don’t need
another poem about potential, or the way we bend at the knees
toward the dark tunnel we hope might lead to greatness. Instead,
I want to celebrate the opening mark of the pen, the infant half-inch of paper
glued to the upper right-hand corner. The inaugural dip of a soaked brush
that lays a line of paint down flat. The “yes” that finally tilts the doer
into doing. This poem is for that plucky charge into the gauntlet, the dogged push
through all those voices arrowing critique. This is for the stroke that bursts the bubble
clinging us to fear. The hand that reaches in not for beauty, but for rubble.

About Maya Stein

My first job out of college was at a PR firm whose primary client was Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. In between writing tip sheets and press releases, I found myself immersed in the whimsical world of clowns and daredevil acrobats and dancing elephants, and I began to see the larger connection between the written page and the landscape outside of it. Since then, I have sought out creative adventures to weave into my writing life, and have designed projects that bring writing opportunities to unexpected places.

My 2010 Tour de Word was a two-month, 12,000-mile driving trip circumnavigating 30 states, during which I led writing workshops for children and adults. In early summer 2012, I launched Type Rider: Cycling the Great American Poemriding my bicycle for 40 days and more than 1,200 miles from Amherst, MA to Milwaukee, WI towing a typewriter behind me, stopping daily to gather words from strangers in the communities I visited.

I followed that with Type Rider II: The Tandem Poetry Tour, a tandem bike ride from Boulder, Colorado to Beloit, Wisconsin in July 2014, during which my partner and I built 25 Little Free Libraries and wrote poetry for the people we met along the way.  The motivation behind these and other projects is to inspire people to share their stories, to make writing more accessible – especially to those who don’t consider themselves writers - and to build community through creative action.

the winking heart

By Guest Blogger Maya Stein

For a moment, I thought the muscle had relaxed, lay flaccid

against my bed pillows, consenting to this new embrace.

My lips puckered open. The rain was coming down hard,

wiping the street free and spring was upon us, of course –

that would have been reason enough to say yes to the clean slate

of whatever this was. But the drama on the skylights jolted

everything inside of me, and I felt how quickly my heart

rose from its horizontal idleness, gathered its boots, and bolted

out the door. It knew the risk, returning – the house quiet and alone.

But what can I say? I am more river than rest, more flesh than bone.

the language between us

By Guest Blogger Maya Stein
Not in the way of verbs. Not like the exchange at the post office, the weighing in,
the request for faster service. Not like the bartender taking an order, or the saleswoman
proffering a selection of black dresses. Not like a hand rising in a classroom, the answer
tipping out of the mouth. Not like directions from the gas station attendant or
telling the time to a stranger or the pleasantries of the checkout clerk. Not like previews
in a dark movie theater, the assault of a soundtrack. Not like the stoic delivery of news
anchors or the urgings of the gym instructor or the televangelist booming from the stage.
Instead, the language between us threading through the cracks, in air and breath and page
and all the nuance of a simple, single glance. Our tongue is split in half, our body into thirds,
love pulsing in the center of it all, a beautiful failure of words.

Invisible Work

By Guest Blogger Alison Luterman

Because no one could ever praise me enough,

because I don't mean these poems only

but the unseen

unbelievable effort it takes to live

the life that goes on between them,

I think all the time about invisible work.

About the young mother on Welfare

I interviewed years ago,

who said, "It's hard.

You bring him to the park,

run rings around yourself keeping him safe,

cut hot dogs into bite-sized pieces for dinner,

and there's no one

to say what a good job you're doing,

how you were patient and loving

for the thousandth time even though you had a headache.

And I, who am used to feeling sorry for myself

because I am lonely,

when all the while,

as the Chippewa poem says, I am being carried

by great winds across the sky,

thought of the invisible work that stitches up the world day and night,

the slow, unglamorous work of healing,

the way worms in the garden

tunnel ceaselessly so the earth can breathe

and bees ransack this world into being,

while owls and poets stalk shadows,

our loneliest labors under the moon.

There are mothers

for everything, and the sea

is a mother too,

whispering and whispering to us

long after we have stopped listening.

I stopped and let myself lean

a moment, against the blue

shoulder of the air. The work

of my heart

is the work of the world's heart.

There is no other art.

write yourself here

By Guest Blogger Maya Stein

On a river in Georgia, paddling past question marks. On a park bench in Jersey, starting from empty.

The Starbucks in Chelsea amid a collision of coffee orders. The apartment where an uncle lived

when he was still alive, and how it still smells like yesterday. The first rock climb of the season.

The last pound of the diet. In the gridlock of indecision. In the freefall that previews every courage.
Write yourself here. Make a strike with your pen. Look the words dead in the eye.
See how the ink makes it suddenly real, how that slight indentation in the paper where the letters
have made their new home have given you one, too. Believe it. Where you have found yourself
is exactly where you need to be, and the line breaks and the smudges and double-spaces
and misspellings are right where you need to be, too. Stop telling yourself you made any mistakes.
You didn't. You didn't.

I'm thrilled to see that Susan Harrow is doing this podcast! I've taken a number of Susan's courses and I just love how warm, accessible, and doable her work is. Susan is an amazing trainer who is knowledgable about *all* aspects of publicity and media training, but she never overwhelms us with too much at once. She makes everything bite sized. (Sound-bite sized!) This podcast is no exception. You'll love the stories she tells to illustrate he points because they help make the information memorable. And she gives simple things to practice with. If you want to grow your business, I highly recommend this podcast. Not only will you love the training, I know you will love Susan's generous heart + authentic teaching style.

on the eve of Spring

By Guest Blogger Maya Stein
I saw them, kissing on a sidewalk bench. I’d left the movie
with my heart in my throat, a story about beating the odds,
an impossible alliance forged from accident and luck. The way
they leaned into it, I would have said it was new, their bodies
making fervent contact, his arm clutching her shoulder blade,
her drawn knees tipped, as if drunk, into his torso. Sometimes, a moment
holds our contradictions perfectly, the tentative and unafraid,
history and hope threading in one touch. I drove on, thinking what it meant
to lean into the risk, how loving always drives the wager.
The moon was nowhere to be seen, but the stars were everywhere.

Because Even The Word Obstacle Is An Obstacle

By Guest Blogger Alison Luterman

Try to love everything that gets in your way:

the Chinese women in flowered bathing caps

murmuring together in Mandarin, doing leg exercises in your lane

while you execute thirty-six furious laps,

one for every item on your to-do list.

The heavy-bellied man who goes thrashing through the water

like a horse with a harpoon stuck in its side,

whose breathless tsunamis rock you from your course.

Teachers all. Learn to be small

and swim through obstacles like a minnow

without grudges or memory. Dart

toward your goal, sperm to egg. Thinking Obstacle

is another obstacle. Try to love the teenage girl

idly lounging against the ladder, showing off her new tattoo:

Cette vie est la mienne, This life is mine,

in thick blue-black letters on her ivory instep.

Be glad shell have that to look at all her life,

and keep going, keep going. Swim by an uncle

in the lane next to yours who is teaching his nephew

how to hold his breath underwater,

even though kids aren’t allowed at this hour. Someday,

years from now, this boy

who is kicking and flailing in the exact place

you want to touch and turn

will be a young man, at a wedding on a boat

raising his champagne glass in a toast

when a huge wave hits, washing everyone overboard.

He'll come up coughing and spitting like he is now,

but he'll come up like a cork,

alive. So your moment

of impatience must bow in service to a larger story,

because if something is in your way it is

going your way, the way

of all beings; towards darkness, towards light.

Be the Holy Universe **
By Guest Blogger Maya Stein

If you exploded from the pressure. Left a comet trail of toothy rubble.
Blasted the sky with metal-hot planets and their icy twins.
If you ignored the usual parameters of space.
If you let the edges shrink from the margins and disappear.
If you coalesced and dissolved in the same breath. If you carried the paradox
of change, the instruction to take in and let go. If you forgot the body
that brought you here, at the intersection of now and what next.
If you unremembered your winglessness. If you overlooked the signs
that said how far and how much. You can be the holy universe, too,
carving a map from scratch, shouting your prayer of new, indefinite light.

** I borrowed this wonderful line from Mika, a student in one of the Food for the Soul Train after-school creative writing sessions I co-facilitate with Amy Tingle.

Oxygen
By Guest Blogger Maya Stein

In her apartment, a 5th floor walkup on the edges of the Lower East Side, I could hear the whistle-hiss of the radiators. It was spring, technically, but the forecast admitted, with a twinge of defeat, more snow coming mid-week. She opened the door embarrassed, crying, her body spent from the long season and a weariness in her heart that she feared was permanent, a drought of the muscle necessary for survival in this dense, relentless city. We said, “But this is what it means to be alive.” How a certain retreat, structureless and shadowy, lets the oxygen back in. How roots grow better in the dark. And we sat, quiet, as heat flowered from the walls and the room filled with sounds of the busy street.

Wood, Poems, Coffee
for Laurie
By Guest Blogger Maya Stein

The day, a series of unconnectable chapters. Bends in the road that lead to a construction site in full swing or worse, a dead end with a sign that says”Turn back.” What interrupts plans, collides with good intentions, tips the equilibrium we’ve been fighting against the sways and sputters of everything that touches us. And how sometimes, our own life begs for a divorce, lifts its heavy arms to sign the papers, begins the first curve of the first letter of our name. Then, like the startle of spring green, the elementals return. Wood, poems, coffee. Warmth, beauty, love.

It is enough. Enough of a bridge that we slide toward the highway again, write a new story that tells where we were and where we might be going.
