how to rescue your reputation when the media ruins it
The top neurosurgeon for Highland Hospital in Oakland, CA, Dr. Federico Castro-Moure told me his story during a break at my San Francisco Learning Annex class which he attended, called How You Can Get a 6 Figure Book Advance.
Castro-Moure said that just as he was about to operate on a patient when an assisting nurse called in the cops. An altercation ensued and the police claimed he was drunk and disorderly. Castro-Moure told me he had a glass of wine with dinner. (I didn’t know that there wasn’t a policy against surgeons drinking before operating-it’s their judgment or the judgment of their peers. Patient beware).
Castro-Moure explained that his reputation had been ruined when headlines came out nationally with statements like: Drunk Surgeon From Hell or Bully Neurosurgeon Arrested and the one that went out on Associated Press: Oakland Surgeon On Bail After Operating Room ‘Fit’.
Although David Altman, the hospital’s chief medical officer said, “He is a well-respected neurosurgeon, well respected in his field,” this quote did not get picked up by many media sources. However, the negative allegations were repeated. On April 7th, 2006 the San Francisco Chronicle reported that the allegations where cleared and Castro-Moure’s medical license restored. But will his reputation be forever besmirched?
A couple of words of warning when dealing with the media. You can see that making just one mistake can ruin your life pretty quickly if it’s broadcast nationwide. Same with your words. Once they’ve left your lips they are fair game to be re-printed ad-nauseum. Of course there will always be situations you’re unprepared for, but thinking about the consequences can make you get savvy quite fast.

Is this the case of fair or misguided media? What do you think?
