Make of yourself a light

In our culture, I think that presence is often underrated. And sometimes not even acknowledged, particularly for introverts who think that they have to be big to be seen. But I think the presence is the most important thing. Who you are, what you bring, what we see in that split second of all of your experiences coming to bear.

I was reminded of that when I was in my acupuncturist office years ago. And people came all over the world to her because she was so famous for getting great results. She was having this animated conversation with this kid about 15 and they were totally involved and I knew that I wanted to meet him. But I didn’t really know how and I was standing awkwardly at the door not knowing what to do.

Fortunately, he knew what to do. He came right up to me, put out his hand he goes. “Hi, I’m Aaron.” I shook his hand. We started a conversation. It wasn’t exactly a conversation because they really weren’t words there were sounds but we were deeply communicating. And what kept running through my mind is: ”make of yourself a light.”

He was such a bright light and that conversation filled me with such good feeling that for days. I walked around lit up and that phrase that make of yourself a light just kept running through my mind. And that’s what I want to say to you: “make of yourself a light.” If there’s nothing else that you do in this world make of yourself a light and you will be welcomed everywhere, including media.
