Sell Yourself Without Selling Your Soul™
For years my assistant, Kelly Poelker, has been bugging, cajoling, nudging and otherwise pressuring me to get my book Sell Yourself Without Selling Your Soul™, more out to more people. I’ve finally done it by turning the book into an E-Course.
One of the greatest things about having a book is talking to people who have been touched by your words in some way. Those words always seemed to come at the right time for me. Sometimes when I wasn’t sure I was on the right track, or even in the right profession, or the end of a project seemed so far out of sight as to be impossible to complete, someone would send me a letter or email telling me how much my book meant to them.
The surprising thing was it was for all different kinds of reasons. Not the ones you’d typically think. Of course people wrote in to say that they felt more comfortable and prepared in front of the camera with my guidance. Or they would tell me that my book helped them see that their gifts were worth bragging about in a way that wasn’t bragging after all. Others made great strides becoming well-known selling heaps of stuff. And that was all wonderful.
But the ones that were most meaningful to me were people who wrote and said that they used my book as a parenting guide. Or that they followed their “gypsy spirit”. Or that they found courage in an unexpected way going a bit beyond their comfort zone. They discovered means to use the information I provided in a way that was essential to them, not necessarily in a way that I had expected.
My first editor at HarperCollins, with her red pen flashing, told me I wasn’t writing a lifestyle book. I disagreed. Thankfully, she left and I wrote the book I wanted. I believe that everything we do, say, are and think needs to be in alignment in order for us to get what we truly want — and for whatever we’re promoting to take-off at maximum speed. There’s a saying that when everything lines up properly the universe gets behind us. But we have to be accountable for lining things up. One of my favorite mottos says it best, “Trust in Allah, but tie your camel.”
One of the reasons I wrote Sell Yourself Without Selling Your Soul™ was to protect the beauty in the world. Too often the more sensitive, shy, artistic or introverted people get crushed under the louder, faster more aggressive ones who hog the majority of the attention. In my youth I was the gal who pulled the bully off the kid he was beating up. I still see that as my place in the world.
